Excellence Isn’t Built on Culture—It’s Built on Learning and Growth!

Rod Morgan, Head of Faculty, RPM-Academy

In many corporate circles, phrases like “Building a Culture of Excellence” have an enticing ring. After all, who wouldn’t want to cultivate excellence, that hallmark of high performance, around every corner? Yet, as meaningful as this goal may sound, the very notion of culture as a driver of excellence may be far less effective than it appears on the surface.

In reality, the path to sustained excellence is forged through disciplined focus on meeting and anticipating customer needs, designing adaptive and resilient processes, and building a workforce ready to navigate disruptive change. By fostering a growth mindset and supporting continuous learning, we cultivate operational excellence that not only endures but evolves. Here’s why a growth-oriented approach is crucial and why simply "building culture", if even possible, may not be enough.

Why “Building a Culture of Excellence” Can Be Misleading

A person looking at a big sign that reads "Excellence" but a question mark appears above it.

When companies talk about fostering a “Culture of Excellence,” they often focus on shaping employee mindsets and behaviors through well-intentioned cultural initiatives. But where these efforts sometimes miss the mark is in lacking tangible, skill-driven practices that create and sustain excellence. Operational excellence—true excellence—isn’t a lofty goal to reach for but a direct outcome of focused investments in knowledge, process design, and customer-centric innovation.

"Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death." — Albert Einstein

While culture is indeed a powerful output, (and I would argue, not an input), it’s best seen as a byproduct of a well-run, learning-driven organization rather than an input. A culture of excellence flourishes only when the structural pillars of operational excellence are in place.

The Power of a Growth Mindset in the Workplace

A growth mindset encourages employees to continuously reimagine products, services, and customer experiences, viewing each challenge as an opportunity for reinvention. In so doing, they are redefining their place and role not only within the organization but in society as a whole, growing and evolving with each step.

Organizations that invest in growth-minded teams reap substantial benefits: employees become more resilient, adaptable, and ready to pursue innovative solutions rather than quick fixes. The concept of building T-shaped and comb-shaped skills, for example, goes beyond traditional professional development. It’s about creating a workforce capable of both deep expertise and broad problem-solving skills, empowering employees to make informed decisions and drive transformational outcomes.

From Fixing Problems to Fostering Innovation

In its early days, continuous improvement was about eliminating errors and enhancing and optimizing processes. But as the market demands shift and technology rapidly evolve, so too must our approach. Today, operational excellence depends not just on perfecting what already exists but on having the courage and insight to reimagine what could be. By focusing on innovation and customer needs, companies can not only “fix problems” but set a course toward a future where every process, product, and service is optimized for relevance and impact.

"The purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one." — Malcolm Forbes

A growth mindset embedded in a continuous learning culture transforms improvement efforts into powerful opportunities for innovation. Employees equipped with broad, deep knowledge and skills who are encouraged to think beyond immediate fixes begin exploring ways to elevate the entire customer journey. This mindset fuels everything from better user experiences to more efficient internal processes, continuously pushing the organization closer to real excellence.

Creating Real Excellence: When Culture Becomes an Outcome, Not a Strategy

True excellence doesn’t stem from making “culture” the goal or even considering it a requisite "input" to achieve sustainable excellence. Instead, it emerges from day-to-day commitments to skill-building, innovation, and customer focus.

Culture, in this sense, becomes an organic result of these sustained efforts. Organizations that invest in skill development, particularly those that prioritize accessible and affordable learning opportunities, lay a foundation for a culture that supports, rather than hinders, growth.

Providing Your Team the Space to Learn... and Evolve!

But where do employees find the time and space to continually learn and grow their skills and knowledge? How do we make time for ourselves to invest in what might be humanity’s most important goal—to learn and to evolve?

"Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever." — Mahatma Gandhi

To support growth-minded employees, organizations can set aside time and physical or virtual space dedicated solely to learning by fostering a workplace where personal and professional development are integral to every role. By providing employees a defined space for learning—whether it’s a regular “learning hour,” a dedicated room for courses and study, or access to online platforms—organizations can cultivate an environment where growth is not only encouraged but expected and in so doing, create an environment where excellence is the natural output.

Rather than being a top-down initiative, a growth mindset-based culture is resilient, ready to evolve, and driven by the employees who feel equipped and empowered.
